The Experience Index

017/365

It seems to me that people are figuring out that they don't enjoy their 9-5, work-in-a-cubicle, live for the weekend type job and are finding the courage to leave it. Younger folks are discovering that they don't need to plan for this type of life either. The problem is, though, that people do not know what they are getting into when they choose a career path. The amount of schooling they need, the type of life they will have while going to school, the money they will make, etc. I know that all that is more or less spelled out on paper in brochures and whatnot but to hear it from someone who has gone through it is another thing.

Since it takes so long to go through college, making a wrong decision early on makes it difficult to change later on. I do not have a complete solution for this problem but it seems to me that there should be a repository of knowledge and experience that helps and guides young students. The knowledge in this repository would be added to by people who have experience in a particular career. There are, of course, counselors and professors who give advice but I believe there are many who fall through the cracks, so to speak. Maybe I'm wrong and this isn't that big of an issue but a site where the consequences of choosing a particular path are laid out would be a service to society.
